Sewing FAQs

Sewing supplies including thread spools, pins, and scissors on a work table

What sewing machine should I buy as a beginner?

Almost any modern entry-level mechanical machine from Brother, Janome or Singer (under about £200) is fine. Look for a straight stitch, a zig-zag, a buttonhole function and an automatic needle threader.

Why does my sewing machine thread keep breaking?

Usually the upper thread is not seated in the tension discs — rethread it with the presser foot raised. Other causes are the wrong needle size for the thread, or old, brittle thread.

Why are my stitches skipping?

Almost always the needle. Use a ballpoint needle on stretch fabric, replace a blunt or bent needle, and check it is in the right way round.

Can a regular sewing machine do embroidery?

Yes — the free-motion, hand-guided kind, plus decorative built-in stitches and appliqué. It cannot automatically stitch a digitised design like a dedicated embroidery machine.

How often should I change my needle?

Every 8 to 10 hours of sewing, at the start of a big project, or whenever stitches start skipping. Needles are cheap and a dull one causes a lot of grief.

Do I need an overlocker?

Not to start. A zig-zag stitch finishes seams perfectly well for your first months. An overlocker is lovely for neat, stretchy seams later on.
